Effervesce is a new body of work by Chatham based Canadian ceramicist, Andrea Vuletin. Andrea is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts, Illustration, and design focus. She also studied ceramics at George Brown College in Toronto under the guidance of instructors Debora Black and Nancy Solway. Andrea has been a full-time ceramic artist since 1997, primarily making decorative functional ware using wheel thrown porcelain. The botanical work that makes up the Vuletin’s signature today took many years to develop. The forms grew from earlier lines that focused on the marriage of form and graphic surface decor and the desire to study and draw from nature. The resulting combination of these stepping stones, the Botanical line, is at once contemporary and nostalgic.

The collection that makes up Effervesce has both hand-built and wheel-thrown components that convey different impressions. The thrown elements have a glossy surface over fine illustrations and curvy fluid forms. Together these may read as confident, joyful, relaxed and reverent. The pod forms are hand-built using impressed slabs and coil and pinch methods, and though they have tight forms, they swirl and collide into one another, generating a variety of implications. The pods themselves are abstract organic forms and can represent seeds, cells, beads, or stones that may represent containment, potential, meditation, worry or prayer. The compositions have randomness that can be read as accident or growth, employing balance, movement, and connection.

Overall, this collection of work holds whispers of things the artist holds dear and the percolation of these concerns through the act of making. Joy and concern are both present.
