Francis Fougere – The Carports of Pleasant Valley

June 2 – 25, 2017
Opening Reception  Friday June 2, 7 – 9:30pm

Francis Fougere, has been photographing car ports in Pleasant Valley with an intent to document this past form of urban residential architecture. On this post-war subject, he notes:

In terms of suburban residential architecture, the car port made its debut, either as a standalone structure or as a continuation of the bungalow roofline. The car port was soon to be replaced by the full garage within 20 years. Growing up in this time we were in the space race, men were landing on the moon and sci-fi shows and films were showing images of futuristic space ports and cars docked in car ports. Car port construction had its day in that era. Today suburban residential architecture places a giant garage as the main curbside visual feature.
