October 7 – 30, 2016
Opening Reception Friday October 7, 7 – 9:30pm

Gerard Brender a Brandis invitationThis exhibition features 70 original wood engravings by one of Canada’s pre-eminent bookbinders and printers. Born in the Netherlands in 1942, Gerard Brender à Brandis graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Fine Arts History in 1965. He is now known widely as an expert in typesetting, papermaking, and book illustration. Brender à Brandis has produced more than forty limited editions of handmade books from his studio in Stratford, Ontario.

In 2001 he created the first engraving of what was to become a suite of 70 scenes based on sketches of the Grand River. Forty of these were included in a handmade book, A Pebble’s Journey, with a text by his sister, Marianne Brandis. The team of siblings has now produced another book, The Grand River: Dundalk to Lake Erie, published by The Porcupine’s Quill in 2015 and available at the Carnegie Gallery throughout the exhibition.

“The project about the Grand River and things along its banks has become the magnum opus of my career.” ~ Gerard Brender à Brandis
