The Carnegie Gallery is pleased to welcome award winning, self-taught, Hamilton based visual artist Gordon Leverton. This solo exhibition entitled “¡viva! color“, celebrates the vibrantcolours, rhythms, and textures of everyday life in Latin America — from the bright and charming facades and layered architecture, Leverton captures the unique character of the barrios inMexico City, Guadalajara and Oaxaca, Mexico and Lima, Peru.

Leverton’s portrayal of urban architectural elements rendered with flattened perspective, bright colors, and strong play of light and shadow has become his recognizable style. Inspired by the hidden networks of alleyways and streets, he transforms buildings, shadows, urban elements, and skylines into dynamic compositions that explore the connections between architecture and community. Leverton is currently exploring ways in harmonizing his urban subject matter through abstraction and bringing focus to physical spaces that are overlooked or ignored as traditional subjects of landscape.
