Laura Brandreth (Ancaster, ON)
Laura Brandreth is a sculptor and designer from Ancaster, Ontario. She holds a BFA Honours in Fine Art and a Minor in History from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where she graduated in 2017. Laura has had her work represented by such institutions as Carnegie Gallery, Hamilton Artists Inc., Assembly Gallery, Cambridge Idea Exchange, Glenhyrst Art Gallery and Craft Ontario. Brandreth’s current studio practice utilises woodworking with a focus on semi-functional crafted objects that manipulate a light source. This series of illuminated appliances are designed and produced entirely by hand using an amalgamation of domestic and exotic woods, sheet metal, cast urethane resin elements, industrial felt and curated hardware which are composed around the integration of an electrical component. These prototypes investigate the application of absurd forms to crafted functions and draw inspiration from man-made structures connected with engineered purpose.
