Selected Plates is a solo exhibition by local Dundas painter, Marco Cibola, of recent abstract paintings that document and reinterpret compositions originally developed using a modular, tile-based system. Each painting in the exhibition is a permanent visual “recording” of a composition initially created through play with hand-painted wood tiles. The exhibition focuses on this final form—the committed act of translating a moment of spatial play into a deliberate painted surface.
No masking is used; each edge is hand-painted, emphasizing a slow, meditative attention to shape and boundary. This approach foregrounds the physicality of painting while retaining the logic and structure of the original system. Selected Plates invites a quiet and focused engagement with abstraction—asking viewers to consider how temporary play can lead to visual permanence, and how structure can support improvisation.
