Sam Gardner – Recent Drawings

October 30 – November 22, 2015
Opening reception Friday November 6, 7-9:30pm

Sam Gardner exhibition invitationSam Gardner is a realist, who works exclusively from life. He is a specialist in monochromatic media (pencil, chalk, conté, hard pastels, charcoal, and ink washes), who is known principally for portrait and figure studies. More recently he has turned his attention toward still life work while continuing to engage, on occasion, with landscape drawing.

As a former student at the Dundas Valley School of Art in Hamilton, Ontario, Sam was encouraged to develop his skills as a draftsperson by his teachers, John Miecznikowski, Katherine Macdonald, and Rae Bates. Today, his love of line, contour and value is keenly felt in his exquisite drawings. Here, the process of drawing is particularly important. As Gardiner notes:

… for me I find in drawing, in both process and product, something that is closer to a careful and respectful revealing of the mystery of beings. I seek, in my choices and craft, to uncover rather the mystery of individuals, such as is involved in the rich particular-ness, deep historicity, and the unseen connections which can only be suggested in the drawing.
